Distraction

This technique can be very powerful and useful if you learn to do it effectively. It works best for a short period of time such as if you are having a medical procedure like a biopsy, or if you find it very painful to climb the stairs or to stand for long enough to do the washing up. It can also be used to help get to sleep. Distraction works by getting your mind to concentrate 100% on something other than your pain, for example, thinking of the words to a poem, counting backwards from 200 in threes, remembering the names of people you were in school with or the names of all the teachers.
