Rob is well aware that exercising can help and has taken up gentle cycling to try and alleviate the problem

Rob Sayers (27) from Cardiff has suffered from back pain for 7-8 years. He has been in severe pain on many occasions, and been forced to take pain killers for relief. He has been advised that the best course of action is to stay active and avoid rest, but admits that sometimes this can be difficult:

"The severe pain tends to lasts for 1-2 days. After that I still experience discomfort, but am up and about."

Rob's GP has referred him for physiotherapy and ultrasound treatment. He doesn't think enough is known about back pain. Rob is well aware that exercising can help and has taken up gentle cycling to try and alleviate the problem.

Time with patients is needed to address these concerns and to re-inforce the advice to stay active. I welcome the 'Welsh Backs' campaign which is making this advice more available to the public and reassuring back pain sufferers that staying active is definitely the right thing to do!
