Iwan Roberts

"I have found that it doesn't hurt at all if I do regular exercise"

Iwan Roberts (35) originally from Bangor has suffered from back pain on and off for 14 years. He says:

"I have found that it doesn't hurt at all if I do regular exercise. I had debilitating pain in 1992 and 2006 and went to see my GP on both occasions."

Iwan had serious mobility problems during his last period of back pain this summer. He had to leave work early one day and, on arriving home, it took him an hour to change from his work clothes:

"I could only wear shorts for three weeks because it hurt to reach down to put on long trousers."

He believes that a lot of people are still unaware of the best course of action for coping with back pain, but is aware that keeping active can help to increase mobility and assist recovery. Iwan exercises three times a week:

"I attend a circuit training class on a Monday and Wednesday, and a "boxercise" class on a Friday. I also do stretching exercises, and try to take a 30 minute walk every lunchtime."

Back pain is a big problem for Wales. There is a cost to individuals, which can include physical and mental ill health and unemployment, and there is a wider financial cost to the economy in Wales.
